Sophie, an ordinary girl, often works quietly alone in her hat shop. One day, Sophie unexpectedly encounters the wizard Howl in an alley. Because of this, she is targeted by the Witch of the Waste. That night, the jealous Witch of the Waste finds Sophie and turns her into a 90-year-old old woman. Poor Sophie is at a loss, and to avoid causing panic, she has no choice but to run away from home.

In the howling winds of the wilderness, the brave Sophie accidentally rescues Turnip Head the scarecrow, and with his help, enters a moving castle. In this dirty and dilapidated castle, she meets the fire demon Calcifer and the wizard's apprentice.

A mysterious and fantastical journey thus begins...
