Qian Zhongshu, whose original name was Yangxian, whose courtesy names were Zheliang, Mocun, Huaiju, and Zhongshujun, was a famous modern Chinese writer and literary researcher. He was a member of the English translation team of Selected Works of Mao Zedong. In his later years, he worked at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences as vice president. Book critic Xia Zhiqing believed that the novel Fortress Besieged was "the most interesting and carefully crafted novel in modern Chinese literature, and perhaps the greatest one." His achievements in literature, national history, comparative literature, and cultural criticism were even dubbed "Qian Studies" by his admirers.
