Roberto Bolaño (1953-2003) was born in Chile. His father was a truck driver and amateur boxer, and his mother taught mathematics and statistics at school. In 1968, his family moved to Mexico. In 1973, Bolaño returned to Chile to join the socialist revolution but was arrested and almost killed.
