◎ Introduction
This book is a general history of the ancient Mediterranean that tells the rise and fall of ancient Mediterranean civilizations and explores the origin and formation of Western civilization. The author, Charles Freeman, takes Egypt, Greece and Rome, the three most representative ancient Mediterranean civilizations, as the entry point, and leads readers to comprehensively review the ups and downs of the entire Mediterranean world from the rise of ancient Near Eastern civilization in 5000 BC to the end of the classical era in 600 AD. This book goes beyond the traditional political history framework and strives to introduce and explain history in an all-round way through multiple dimensions such as literature, art, philosophy, architecture, and social economy. The author also uses a lot of space to review the process of Europeans rediscovering and accepting Greek-Roman civilization in modern times, reminding readers to be vigilant against the abuse of history. The book also includes many exquisite illustrations and maps.
Although this book is an entry-level reading on ancient history, it still contains rigorous academic discussions and serious thinking. It also uses simple words to present to readers the latest research results and major archaeological discoveries in the Western academic community in recent years.
