Introduction · · · · · ·
On October 12, 1929, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry arrived in Buenos Aires to participate in the work of opening up routes to the South American continent. In 1930, he was awarded the title of Knight of the French Legion of Honor for his outstanding work in civil aviation.
Flying, in that era, was a very cool and impressive profession, but it was also a difficult and dangerous job. Everyone was full of endless fantasies about the blue sky, but not everyone had the physique and courage of a pilot, and not everyone had the indelible will and courage to live in the face of death.
The writer's experiences in America in 1929 and 1930 provided him with real and thrilling material for writing Night Flight.
The story unfolds on two lines: one in the sky, where the pilot Fabian flies through thunder and storms, and rises and falls among mountains and sea of clouds in the dark night; the other on the ground, where the head of the airline, Rivière, waits in the lighted office, anxiously waiting for the news of the safe arrival of the plane. "One moving and one still, one dark and one bright, the contrasting pictures of light and shadow appear alternately, compact and rhythmic." Night Flight was published in 1931, and Gide wrote a preface for it. The book won the Femina Prize that year, was soon translated into English and German, and was adapted into the big screen in 1933.
