* Beauvoir's acclaimed work / Autobiographical realistic novel
* Loving each other deeply while maintaining freedom is a beautiful thing.
She Came to Stay is Simone de Beauvoir's first work, and is also considered an autobiographical realistic novel. Pierre and Françoise are a couple who invite the young Xavière to join their relationship. The elegant Françoise, the young Xavière, and Pierre, who loves both women, attempt to establish a harmonious trio between the three, "three people who make every effort to love each other more colorfully..." But the trio devolves into a "love triangle," rife with jealousy, suspicion, and absurdity. Françoise, who defends Xavière but is also tormented by her, finally makes a decision.
After its publication, the book garnered widespread attention and reviews, was shortlisted for the Goncourt Prize that year, and cemented Beauvoir's position in French literature. The romantic model it depicts was practiced by Beauvoir throughout her life, and she was heavily criticized for it. In this book, Beauvoir explores a philosophical dilemma that had troubled her since the 1920s: the opposition between the self and the other. The book's epigraph quotes a line from Hegel: every consciousness desires the death of the other. Phenomenologist Maurice Merleau-Ponty highly praised this work, stating that "She Came to Stay inaugurated a new philosophical writing method."
