Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
Maugham was a master at manipulating people's appetite for gossip, knowing how to keep things a secret at just the right time and then revealing them at a surprising moment.
—Evelyn Waugh
A literary prodigy vividly recounts anecdotes and stories from the literary and art circles... accurate, witty, full of sarcasm, but not at all exaggerated.
——The Spectator Magazine

After the great writer Driffield passed away, his wife asked someone to write a biography for him. The narrator of the novel, Ashenden, was invited by the biographer to recall his interactions with the writer, and the story unfolded from there. Deep in Ashenden's memory, we found the writer's ex-wife, the charming Rosie. She was amorous by nature, and she was affectionate everywhere, but she was kind, honest, elegant and lively. In this book, Maugham changed his prejudice against women in his previous works, and recalled the life of a beautiful woman as an admirer, and embellished it with many anecdotes in the literary and artistic circles. The layout of the whole novel is well-organized, reality and memories are interspersed with each other, and the text is clean, sharp and profound, creating the most vivid and brilliant female image in all of Maugham's novels.
