Popular writer Alroy Keel wants to write a biography of the late famous writer Drifield, but he knows little about Drifield when he was young, so he asks Drifield's friend, another writer, Ashenden for help. Under Keel's persistence, Ashenden recalls his early interactions with Drifield and his ex-wife Rosie.

"The Family Shame", also known as "The Family Shame", was published in 1930 and is Maugham's favorite novel. The author changed his prejudice against women in previous works and drew materials from the real literary and artistic circles.
