Alai, a Tibetan, was born in 1959 in Maerkang County, Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, northwest Sichuan, commonly known as "Four Tusi", which means the land governed by four Tusi. He graduated from Maerkang Teachers College. His major works include the poetry collection "Lingmo River", the novel collections "Bloodstains of the Old Year" and "Silversmith in the Moonlight", the long prose "Stairs of the Earth", and the novels "Dust Settles" and "Empty Mountain". The novel "Dust Settles" won the fifth Mao Dun Literature Award.
