Zhang Zao (1962-2010), born in Changsha, Hunan, studied at Hunan Normal University and Sichuan International Studies University. In 1986, he went to Germany to study, and then lived in the West for a long time. He received a doctorate in literature and philosophy from the University of Trier, Germany. He taught at the University of Tübingen, Germany, and was a judge of the European Union Literature and Art Foundation and a corresponding professor of "Contemporary China Studies". He returned to China in the early 21st century and taught at Henan University. Later, he became a professor at the School of Literature and Journalism and Communication of Minzu University of China. He died of lung cancer in 2010. He has published poetry collections "Spring and Autumn Letters" and "Research on Chinese Cultural Modernity" (in German), and edited books such as "German-Chinese Bilingual Dictionary" and "Huang Ke". He also translated several English and German poems and fairy tales. His published translations include "Stevens Poetry and Prose" (co-translated with Chen Dongbiao), fairy tale picture books "Moon Flowers" and "Dark Night", etc.
