Hermann Hesse, a German writer, poet and critic, is one of the greatest literary figures of the 20th century.

In 1936, Hesse won the Gottfried Keller Prize, the highest literary award in Switzerland; in 1946, he won the Goethe Prize; in the same year he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

At the age of 21, he published his first poetry collection, Romantic Songs, at his own expense. At the age of 27, Peter Camenzinn was published and received rave reviews. He became famous overnight and won the Bauenfeld Prize. He was followed by immortal works such as Under the Wheel, Demian, Steppenwolf, The Glass Bead Game, and Siddhartha, which won him a great reputation in the literary world.

Since the 1960s, Hesse has become a favorite of the American public. In the United States, he is the most read German writer in the 20th century, and his "Do Your Own Thing" has become the motto of several generations of young people in the United States. In France, Hugo called him "the last knight of German Romanticism". In Japan, Hesse is the most famous German writer besides Goethe. The worship of Hesse has also spread to the world.
