Fernando Pessoa was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1888. His father died when he was less than six years old. His mother remarried the Portuguese consul in Durban, South Africa. Pessoa followed his mother to South Africa, where he attended primary school, secondary school and commercial school. While studying at the University of Cape Town, his English prose won the Queen Victoria Prize. He returned to Lisbon in 1905 and was admitted to the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon the following year, studying philosophy, Latin and diplomacy. He often went to the National Library to read the works of ancient Greek and German philosophers, and continued to read and write in English.

Between 1912 and 1914, young Portuguese literary figures, led by Pessoa, launched a Renaissance movement under the influence of new literary trends in Britain and France, and founded several short-lived but influential literary magazines, including "Exile", "Portuguese Futurism" and "Orfio".

August 3, 1914 was a day of divine revelation for Pessoa, when he wrote most of the large cycle of poems "The Shepherds" (49 poems in total) in one go.

On November 29, 1935, Pessoa was hospitalized due to a serious deterioration of his liver disease. That day he wrote his last words on a small piece of paper: "I don't know what tomorrow will bring." He died the next day.

From 1943, his friend Luis de Montalvo began to sort out his posthumous manuscripts, and the work of publishing Pessoa's complete works continued until the end of the 20th century. As of 1986, Pessoa's complete works had been published, including 11 volumes of poetry, 9 volumes of prose, and 3 volumes of letters. In addition, some works are still being further discovered and sorted out.
