Introduction
【Editor's recommendation】
★ Live with disease, dance with lover, feast with death
The last years of the genius director Jarman, the great artistic soul burning with all its might before its death.
.
★ Loved, fought, despaired, created——
Derek Jarman, who was a director, poet, artist and horticulturist, wrote a beautiful diary like a suicide note when he was terminally ill. The diary was shocking and full of affection. This book is Jarman's most tender disclosure and slowest farewell.
.
★ Fight against prejudice while in pain, build a doomsday garden at the end of the world, and resist death with flowers and loved ones before your life comes to an end.
As one of the few celebrities who publicly disclosed his AIDS status at the time, Jarman fought the disease with passion for life while speaking out to eliminate the public's prejudice against sexual minorities. His partner and friends became the most solid and warm support in the final chapter of his life, and the beautiful garden built next to the nuclear power plant became his spiritual home.
.
★ Eternal love and pain, the throbbing and struggle of the artist's soul, and records the entire process of the conception and creation of classic films such as "Wittgenstein" and "Blue"
Film and images were Jarman's eternal love. Even when he was ill and nearly blind, he still participated in artistic creation with passion. In this last diary, you can get a glimpse into the creative process of this world-class pioneer director and trace the source of his inspiration and love.
.
★ British national treasure actress Tilda Swinton and famous film scholar Mao Jian recommended
Derek Jarman engages with his life and its details with a genius clarity, especially after experiencing the epiphany brought on by illness that is both provocative and redemptive.
—Tilda Swinton
.
Jarman was handsome, humorous, had a personality as bright as mercury, and his innate wisdom made him sweet, angry and passionate... His powerful attraction to both the same and opposite sex has always been a legend in the British art world.
——Maojian
.
Jarman is that kind of trouble-making prophet who might one day rival William Blake.
————John Gill
.
★ Designed by the up-and-coming young designer Shanchuan, the unique red PVC cover with white screen printing on both sides makes the overall binding design of the book extremely avant-garde and artistic. It is also a metaphor for Jarman's years of illness and artistic passion.

"I don't want to end up sad.
if you can,
I want to sing. ”

Slowly Smiling is the last diary of British director Derek Jarman. It records his profound thoughts on life, art, disease, and love when his physical condition gradually deteriorated and his creative ability gradually declined after he became seriously ill. He wrote down his daily artistic thoughts and practices with beautiful and affectionate strokes, recalled his youthful days of socializing with friends, recorded the torment of his body and soul on the sickbed, and expressed his deep worries and indignation about the social dynamics and artistic creation environment in Britain. His writing is filled with joy and pain, anger and tranquility.
This book is Jarman's tombstone, where the artist's soul rests, still fluttering its wings. All his cries and whispers, introspections and confessions are condensed into one line:
“I live in love.”
