Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
When Michelle Robinson was a little girl, her world was limited to the South Side of Chicago. At that time, her family rented a small apartment on the second floor. Michelle and her brother Craig shared a bedroom and often went to the park to play catch games. Under the guidance of her father, Fraser Robinson, and her mother, Marian Robinson, Michelle developed a straightforward and fearless character. However, life soon took her to other places: at Princeton University, she first experienced what it was like to be the only black woman in her class; in an all-glass office building, she became a prominent corporate lawyer, and it was there that a law student named Barack Obama showed up in her office one summer morning and disrupted all her careful plans for life.
Michelle Obama describes her marriage for the first time, particularly the early years of her marriage to Barack Obama and how she found a balance between work and family during the rapid rise of her husband's political career. She reveals their private debates about whether Barack should run for president of the United States and her popular and criticized role during his campaign. With grace, humor, and candor, Michelle tells us vividly the behind-the-scenes story of her family's rise to the world's attention and her eight years in the White House. In the process, she gets to know her country better, and the American people get to know her better.
From humble Iowa kitchens to the ballrooms of Buckingham Palace, from heartbreak to amazing resilience, Becoming takes us to a person who has made historic breakthroughs, takes us into her soul, witnesses how she strives to live authentically, how she contributes her personal power and voice to achieve a higher set of ideals. Michelle tells us her life story candidly and boldly, and asks us a question: Who are we? Who do we want to be?
