In 1991, Bruno Latour persuaded Michel Serres to participate in five interviews, on the topics of "Growth," "Method," "Proof," "The End of Criticism," and "Wisdom," discussing Serres's upbringing and academic reflections. Serres is known for his unconventional way of thinking; his ideas always traverse different times, spaces, and disciplines, establishing connections between seemingly unrelated things, which, while inspiring many readers, also often leaves them perplexed. A major aim of this book is to clarify these confusions and allow readers to more easily understand Serres's thought.
As an introductory text to Serres, readers can learn in this book about the impact of war on him (and on post-WWII French intellectual circles), how the atomic bomb changed his academic direction, his intellectual propositions and practices combining science and humanities, and his views on Lucretius, Leibniz, Weil, Bachelard, and others.
Readers of Latour, on the other hand, can find in this book many of the intellectual influences on his own thought, such as the origins of important concepts like "quasi-objects" and Serres's influence on Science and Technology Studies (STS).
