The remote and quiet Akhara Village, the slow and eternal Kawutu, the summer pasture of Shayihengbulak...
Li Juan, the "Elf of Altay", uses delicate and bright brushstrokes to record the beautiful and shining moments of the northern border area
The book is divided into two volumes. The first volume, Memories (2007-2009), records the fragmented and tenacious life scenes in Kawutu and Akhara Village; the second volume, Corners (2002-2006), records the daily life of Li Juan, her mother and her elderly grandmother as they migrate with the herders: opening a grocery store, working as a tailor, helping the herders to make clothes and skirts, and picking wild fungus in the mountains; the bulging tents on the Shayihengbulak grassland in spring, the noisy and grand Aken singing sessions on the pastures in summer, and the long snowy roads in winter... Gobi, grasslands, forests, snow-capped mountains, horses and herders, the delicate and bright text shows the profound and rich living landscape of nomadic people in the border areas.

The land will grow its own speakers just like it grows wheat and corn. Li Juan is such a speaker.

You can never remember some people’s words even if you read them a hundred times, but you can never forget some other people’s words after reading them once.

On an autumn morning, I saw a squirrel in the woods. With its fluffy tail and fur, it nimbly jumped from tree to tree looking for food. It was so smart that it made people stare at it in a trance, as if they were watching a show. It turned out that its fluffy tail was not for beauty, but for parachuting! It moved easily on the top of the tree, and the wild cats on the ground had no way to deal with it. It was a spirit, and its movements were too fast! As I looked at it, I thought, maybe Li Juan is just such a wild squirrel.

She is the Sei Shonagon of Altay. She makes us, the writers, feel desperate and reminds us of "The Story of Hulan River"... Just like the small town of Hulan River in Heilongjiang miraculously gave birth to a master like Xiao Hong, such a writer suddenly appeared in the wilderness of the Altay Mountains in Xinjiang.
