The Xinhua Dictionary is the first modern Chinese dictionary in New China. It was first published in 1953 and was originally compiled by the Xinhua Dictionary Publishing House. As the world's most widely circulated reference book, it has accompanied several generations in learning Chinese and improving their cultural level.

The 12th edition of the Xinhua Dictionary reflects the progress in the compilation of dictionaries in a national, scientific and modern way. It has the following main features:
