This book is a masterpiece of Western reversal by Dazai Osamu, the representative writer of Japanese rogue literature, which includes three classic works: "The New Hamlet", "The Appeal of the Higher Level" and "Run, Melos".
In the rewrite of Shakespeare's classic tragedy "Hamlet", Dazai Osamu created a Hamlet who likes to cry and act like a spoiled child, and has a middle school syndrome, and even piled up a thrilling family tragedy with laughter. "I don't believe it. I will doubt it until I die."
In the novel "The Appeal", Dazai Osamu plays the role of Judas, the eternal sinner. In the first person, he is a little neurotic and on the verge of collapse. He tells the story of an ordinary man's admiration for his idol, which turned into hatred and contempt due to lack of response, driving him to commit the crime of betrayal that changed the course of human civilization.
"Run, Melos" is a required chapter in Japanese middle school textbooks and is also the most frequently read work by Dazai Osamu. Dazai Osamu (1909-1948), whose real name is Tsushima Shuji, is a representative writer of Japanese rabble literature. In his 39 years of life, he never got out of the entanglement of love, depression, and the shadow of death. Shortly after completing "No Longer Human", he and his female reader Yamazaki Tomoyo committed suicide by jumping into the river at Tamagawa River in Mitaka, Tokyo. His body was found on his birthday a week later, marking the end of his dramatic life. In addition to rabble works, Dazai Osamu's "reversal works" are also very exciting, such as "Gotogi Sushin" (Eastern Reversal) and "New Hamlet" (Western Reversal), showing another side of Dazai Osamu that is completely different from the general perception.
