The Mental Condition of the Times by Karl Jaspers
Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
This book "reviews the origin of Westerners' 'consciousness of the times' from a high-level perspective, analyzes the spiritual principles of the bourgeois revolution, discusses the cultural prerequisites of scientific and technological progress and its role in the transformation of social forms, and discusses the opposition between democratic politics and aristocratic ideals. The book is based on existential philosophical reflection, depicting the great shock of spiritual culture accompanying the modernization process of Western society and the dilemma left by this shock to contemporary Westerners. All of these explore the internal connection and internal conflict between the spiritual tradition of Western culture and modernity."
“Although the book was written in 1930, its profound and vivid description of the contemporary spiritual state of Westerners and the historical roots and broad social background of its formation is still relevant today.”
"The book is based on existential philosophical reflection, describing the great spiritual and cultural shocks that accompany the process of Western socialization and modernization, as well as the dilemmas that this shock has left for contemporary Westerners. Although all of this is about Westerners' 'family affairs', it is something that Chinese people, who are in the process of modernization, cannot help but study."
