Susan Sontag is one of the most important female intellectuals in the contemporary West and has won many international literary awards. As an iconic figure of an era, Sontag's works are intended to seek understanding of the times she lives in. Her life experience also reflects the ideological landscape and literary trends of the Western intellectual and cultural circles from the 1930s to the early 21st century.
French literary historian Beatrice Mousley uses archival documents and published works from both before and after Sontag's life, takes time as the axis and the important events in each stage of Sontag's life as the focus, places Sontag's art criticism, literary creation, political views and spiritual journey in history for examination, and outlines the intellectual journey of this "all-encompassing soul" throughout her life.
