Abbas Kiarostami (1940-2016) is an Iranian film director, screenwriter, producer, photographer and poet. He pioneered the Iranian New Wave. In contrast to the complex and gorgeous style of mainstream films, Abbas established a unique personal style with natural and plain shots and philosophical film connotations, which was widely recognized internationally. He was nominated for several international film festivals. In 1995, his film Lovers Under the Olive Trees won the Silver Screen Award and Best Director at the 8th Singapore International Film Festival; in 1997, Taste of Cherry won the Palme d'Or at the 50th Cannes Film Festival; in 1999, Gone with the Wind won the Special Jury Award and the FIPRESCI Award at the 56th Venice Film Festival.
