Wuhan is located deep inland, and the foreign wind has blown all the way here, but it is already a spent force. Therefore, Wuhan's culture has a strong local flavor, which is mixed with the commercial vulgarity that permeates the market, giving people a particularly rustic feeling. But fortunately, there is the Yangtze River. It is the Yangtze River that makes this city full of a natural majestic atmosphere. This atmosphere has more or less diluted the local customs of Wuhan, and it even makes the Wuhan people who grew up here full of masculinity. They are bold and straightforward, speak loudly and martially, and have the charm of northerners.
——"Wuhan, the Smooth Flowing City"
Back cover text:
If Wuhan is a bead, the Yangtze River is like a string of beads, passing through Wuhan. The Han River, the largest tributary of the Yangtze River, merges with the Yangtze River at the foot of Guishan Mountain in the center of Wuhan. These two rivers cut the ground of Wuhan into three large towns: Hankou, Wuchang, and Hanyang. The three major towns are all located by the river and twist along the river. For this reason, Wuhan people have no sense of direction.
——《Wuhan, This Place》
Wuhan people are helpless, so they are colder than the north when it is cold and hotter than the south when it is hot. For this reason, the character of Wuhan people is compatible with both the north and the south: they have the boldness of northerners and the intelligence of southerners; in other words, they are both barbaric and cunning. The hot and cold living environment naturally makes people's character fluctuate greatly, so Wuhan people are prone to violence and anger, but they are also easy to resolve grievances and let bygones be bygones. As the saying goes, what comes quickly goes quickly.
