In 1950, after successfully crossing the "Empty Quarter" of the Arabian Peninsula, Wilfred Thesiger, a renowned British explorer and travel writer, followed in the footsteps of great explorers like T. E. Lawrence, embarking on a new adventure to the marshes of southern Iraq. Following "Arabian Sands," he wrote this book based on his experiences living in the marshes. These two travelogues of Western Asia are considered Thesiger's representative works and classics of 20th-century travel literature.
Thesiger's writing style is simple and unadorned, much like his character, deeply rooted in the land he trod, merging with the ancient peoples and traditions upon it. During his years living with the Marsh Arabs, the author traveled by dugout canoe between villages, documenting the impressive local customs and culture. This reveals the author's profound identification with the local way of life, his admiration for their warmth, loyalty, courage, and resilience, and his deep concern and melancholy over its disappearance amidst the tide of modernization. All of this makes this book a precious testimony to an ancient culture and way of life.
