Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
"Albert Einstein: A Biography" is the authorized biography of Albert Einstein, "the greatest scientist of the 20th century". It is the only biography written by Philip Frank, Einstein's close friend, like-minded colleague, and contemporary witness, from Einstein's inner world. It has been a bestseller since its publication and has become one of the 100 classic biographies of the 20th century.
Because they were like-minded colleagues, Philip Frank was able to deeply understand the subversive impact of Einstein's theory of relativity on science, ideas and beliefs throughout the 20th century. The book summarizes the physical world before Einstein, gives two most understandable charts of Einstein's discoveries, and depicts the moving moment when the expedition verified Einstein's theory of relativity under a total solar eclipse. In the section "Journey to Prague", we see that in the face of many doubts from the academic community, Einstein and Frank had many late-night talks at his home.
Because they were close friends, in the book we can see the confusion and distress of Einstein in his youth as he pursued his ideals and found himself. And then, Einstein's successful journey of daring to deny and daring to choose. Facing the threat of the Nazis, it was the mutual trust between close friends that allowed Philip Frank to find Einstein who was living in seclusion in Switzerland and witness the whole process of Einstein's journey to the United States.
As an eyewitness of the same era, he did not listen to hearsay about Einstein's attitude towards Zionism. He knew very well that he did not dodge or shirk responsibility for the discovery of the atomic bomb and the advent of the nuclear age. He did not speculate about the values and beliefs that Einstein subverted and reshaped. He did not evade or avoid Einstein's own hesitation and fragility in the face of the great changes of the times.
The Einstein described by Philip Frank is not only "the greatest scientist of the 20th century", but also a wise man who chose to persevere, was compassionate, humorous and wise in that turbulent era.
