【Content Introduction】
As the "master of love, desire and death" (Susan Sontag's words), desire and death are the two main themes that Georges Bataille explored and questioned throughout his life. In addition to erotic novels such as "Story of the Eye", "Madame Edwarda" and "My Mother", Bataille published three monographs on eroticism: "History of Eroticism", "Eroticism" and "Tears of Eros". This "Tears of Eros" is Bataille's last work and can be regarded as an alternative "history of eroticism".
This book continues the theme of Bataille's Eroticism and The Birth of Art: The Miracle of Lascaux, and attempts to reproduce the changes and rise and fall of erotic concepts in the process of art. This book is accompanied by more than 200 pictures, showing us a series of dazzling images: from prehistoric Lascaux murals to modern surrealist paintings, from primitive tribal sacrifices to feudal torture, the paradise of love and the purgatory of death constitute the two poles of human passion. The author explores the true meaning of desire in poetic intoxication and sacred ecstasy, and reveals the face of death hidden behind love through the light of art.
Bataille spent his whole life relentlessly pursuing Eros, while constantly moving towards tears and getting lost in them. As the title of the book "Eros's Tears" suggests, Eros, the symbol of joy, can also fall into sadness. For Bataille, love and death, sex and pain, laughter and tears are originally one. This "Eros's Tears" is Bataille's last book, and also his last tears.
