Lao She (1899-1966)

A modern Chinese novelist, playwright and translator.

His real name is Shu Qingchun, and his pen name is Sheyu. He was born in Beijing and is of Manchu ethnicity.

At the age of 25, he went to England and worked as a Chinese teacher at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and officially began his literary creation.

He returned to China at the age of 31 and taught at Qilu University and Shandong University, entering the peak period of his creative career. During this period, he published a series of important works such as "Cat City", "Divorce" and "Camel Xiangzi".

At the age of 38, he went to Wuhan, and the following year he moved to Chongqing with the "Cultural Association". Later, he visited many places for inspection and condolences.

At the age of 47, he went to the United States to give lectures, and then wrote "Four Generations Under One Roof" in New York and participated in the translation.

He returned to China at the age of 50 and created a large number of plays. He was awarded the title of "People's Artist" for "Longxugou".

He drowned himself in Taiping Lake at the age of 67.

"Cat City" is unique among Lao She's many novels. It is also popular among foreign readers and has been translated into many languages ​​​​including English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Hungarian.
