Jia Pingwa, formerly known as Jia Pingwa, was born in 1952 in Danfeng County, Shaanxi Province. He graduated from the Chinese Department of Northwest University in 1975. He is a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Chairman of the Shaanxi Writers Association, Representative of the People's Congress of Xi'an City, and Honorary Chairman of the Xi'an Writers Association. He began to publish his works in 1974. He has written novels such as Shangzhou and White Night, and the autobiographical novel I am a Farmer. The twelfth month and the first month of the lunar year won the third National Excellent Novella Award of the Chinese Writers Association; Impetuousness won the 1987 American Mobil Pegasus Literary Award; Wasted City won the 1997 French Femina Foreign Literature Award.
