About the Author
Herman Melville (1819-1891) was an outstanding American novelist in the 19th century. His masterpiece Moby Dick was listed as one of the "Ten Best Novels of World Literature" by Maugham. He worked as a sailor on a whaling ship in his early years, which had a profound impact on his later writing. He did not attract enough attention during his lifetime, but became famous 30 years after his death. He is known as the "Shakespeare" of the United States.
