Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
"Seeing" is an autobiographical work by the well-known journalist and host Chai Jing about her ten-year career at CCTV. It is not only a confession of Chai Jing's personal growth, but also a memorandum of the ten-year changes in Chinese society. Ten years ago, she was chosen to be a news anchor for the national television station, but she encountered setbacks due to her lack of experience. After becoming a reporter on the scene during the SARS period, the sharp feeling of the jagged edges of real life allowed her to break free from the constraints of the outside world and herself bit by bit, and she had a broader and deeper understanding of life and human nature. In the past ten years, SARS, the Wenchuan earthquake, the two sessions of the National People's Congress, the Beijing Olympics... Chai Jing's figure can be found at almost every major event, and she has also produced many rigid investigative reports such as the South China tiger photo and land acquisition. In the book, she records the moving details submerged in the grand narrative, leaving a private footnote for the times. As always, Chai Jing sees and records the individuals in the news who have left a strong impression on her life. Everyone is deeply embedded in the world. No one can be just a bystander. What others experience, I must experience. The people and events recorded in the book are their lives, as well as your and my lives.
In Seeing, I did not deliberately choose iconic events, nor did I have the ambition to depict history. From a large number of news reports, I only chose people who left a strong impression on me. I happened to meet these people because of my work. They are flowing, overflowing from the stone dam deep in my heart, and the hard prejudices and patterns are washed away again and again, shaking and collapsing. This shaking is dangerous, but the essence of thought is restlessness.
I try to write down the facts and causes and effects of the constant mistakes, overturns, doubts, and reconstructions as honestly as possible. A country is made up of people, and a person is made up of countless others. How you want to report on a country is how you should report on yourself. - Chai Jing
