"Mangrove" was written in 1998 and first published in 1999. It is Mo Yan's only novel that changes the story background from Gaomi Northeast Township to a modern city and a simple fishing village on the coast of the South China Sea.
The protagonist of the novel, Lin Lan, is the deputy mayor of Nanjiang City. Behind her glamorous identity is a twisted life struggling between money, power and disordered desire. Another beautiful and simple fisherman girl, Zhenzhu, came to the city from the edge of the mangroves. She suffered the pain of life in the entanglement with Lin Lan and her son, but finally grew up in pain. The author uses "Zhenzhu" as a metaphor for life, and constructs a complicated maze of desire for readers by writing about the impact and alienation, loss and growth brought by rural characters entering the city.
"After I arrived at the procuratorate, I wrote a TV series called Mangrove, which was later adapted into a book, also called Mangrove. It was about life in the procuratorate, but in fact it was about broader social life, and some of the common connections of prosecutors in society." - Mo Yan
