The Secret Manuscript is a novel by Sebastian Barry, a contemporary Irish writer. It has won the James Tait Black Memorial Award, the oldest literary award in the UK, and the "Best Novel of the Year Award" at the Costa Literary Awards in 2008. "The Secret Manuscript" tells the legendary life of the heroine Roxanne during the Irish War of Independence. She decided to complete an autobiography in her last journey of life to record her life with her parents in Sligo in the early 20th century. She hid her story under the loose floorboards and did not want the secret to be discovered for the time being. The second narrative thread of the story revolves around Dr. Green, the current chief psychiatrist of the hospital. The hospital is facing the danger of being demolished, and he must decide which patients to transfer and who to let return to society. Green is particularly concerned about Roxanne and begins to tentatively dig into her past. As the story progresses, the pasts of Roxanne and Dr. Green gradually surface. It turns out that Roxanne was a victim of religious events and turbulent politics in Ireland in the early 20th century.
The work continues Sebastian's elegant style and accusation of war, and through an insignificant individual life and the hardships and tribulations he has experienced over the years, it implies the cruelty of war.
