The BFG by Roald Dahl

Published in 1982 when Dahl was 66 years old.

Winner of the British Children's Book Award in 1982. Winner of the German Youth Literature Award in 1984. Winner of the Norwegian and German editions of the World Book for Youth Award in 1986. Included in "Best Books of the Last Twenty Years" in 1997.

Dahl encouraged children to be adventurous, found ways to stimulate their imagination, and told them stories. One evening, he was telling his two daughters a bedtime story, as usual. He talked about a magical powder that could be blown into a bedroom with a long blowpipe, creating wonders in one's mind while asleep! His two daughters pressed him: "How do they do it? Who blows them in through the window?" He explained a few things, said goodnight, and hurried downstairs. A little later, as the lights went out and his daughters were almost asleep, there was a sudden movement outside their bedroom window. They opened their eyes and, in the dark, saw a long pole extending through the curtains, with someone outside loudly blowing. This person was their father – Roald Dahl. It was this prank that led to the birth of The BFG.

The BFG overturns the traditional image of giants in fairy tales. In Dahl's portrayal, the BFG embodies the best human qualities: kindness, eagerness to learn, love, peacefulness, and so on.
