Introduction · · · · · ·
"The Selfish Gene" became a global bestseller after its first publication in 1976. It is one of the top 100 classic masterpieces of the 20th century and a classic work that has a significant influence not only in the field of genetics but also in the field of social sciences.
Where do we come from and where are we going? What is the meaning of life and how do we know ourselves? The Selfish Gene answers these important questions with an imaginative narrative. In this book, Dawkins puts forward a bold insight: we are born selfish, and any creature, including ourselves, is just a machine for survival. This book is real cognitive science. The simple three mechanisms of replication, mutation and elimination can evolve all kinds of life phenomena in the world.
The Selfish Gene provides us with a new worldview. In the book, Dawkins elevates the theory of evolution from the genetic level to the cultural level, coining the term "meme" (cultural gene), a new type of replicator, specifically referring to cultural evolution in the development of human society, and proposing that in this world, only we, humans, can resist the tyranny of selfish replicators.
After the publication of The Selfish Gene, it caused great controversy in all walks of life. This book is the 40th anniversary edition. On the basis of the 30th anniversary edition, it adds Dawkins' response to these controversies, totaling more than 60,000 words. It mainly discusses the common misunderstandings of people on genetic determinism, genetic selection, and genetic adaptability, and then correctly understands life and its meaning from the perspective of genes, further perfecting Dawkins' classic discussion of "The Selfish Gene", forming this special "extended" 40th anniversary edition of The Selfish Gene.
