The novel reveals how the irrationality of capitalist society distorts people's minds, as well as the spiritual loneliness and fragility of life in such a society. Its approach interweaves reality and fantasy, and its artistic level is superb.

Haruki Murakami (1949-), a famous Japanese writer. Born in Kyoto Prefecture, he graduated from the Faculty of Literature at Waseda University.
