Introduction
Where did the study of art history originate?
How does it relate to art?
How have the goals and methods of art history research changed over the past two hundred years?
———————————————————————————————
The history of art has been written and rewritten since classical times. Historians, philosophers, psychologists, and anthropologists have weighed in on the subject, changing our understanding of what art history is and should be. What” opinion.
This book selects 35 of the most groundbreaking and influential critical articles in the field of art history research so far, divided into nine chapters, each focusing on an art history research topic: aesthetics, style, history as art, images and symbols, gender, modern and postmodern, deconstructionism, and museology, and is accompanied by 74 pictures of related works. From classical theory to modernism, from Kant to Foucault, from Winckelmann, the founder of modern art history and scientific archaeology, to Gombrich, a master of contemporary art history. 35 academic giants and artists help readers understand the development of art history from first-hand materials. The editor, Professor Preziosi, writes an introduction for each topic, providing readers with background information and references with critical explanations.
———————————————————————————————
This book is currently the best introduction to art history research. It "defamiliarizes" the entire field of art history and thoroughly reflects the basic processes and assumptions of this field. - Norman Bryson, Professor at Harvard University
This book will stimulate valuable discussion and thinking. And the critical stance taken by the editors makes it more than just an eye-catching collection of essays. --Robert S. Nelson, Professor at the University of Chicago
