Maurice Maeterlinck (1862-1949) was a Belgian playwright, poet and essayist, a representative of symbolist drama, and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1911. He wrote in French and achieved great success throughout his life, especially in drama. He was known as the "Belgian Shakespeare" and his fantasy play The Blue Bird was world-renowned. Maeterlinck's art was unique and was highly praised by Strindberg and Chekhov, and influenced the creation of a group of writers such as Hauptmann, Björnson and Yeats.
