Henry Miller, Allen Ginsberg and others were deeply influenced by Leaves of Grass, the masterpiece of Whitman, the "Father of Free Verse". This book is a selection of the best works by Whitman research expert and famous poetry translator Li Yeguang, who translated the works vividly. Li Yeguang graduated from the Department of Western Languages and Literature of Peking University in 1951 and joined the Chinese Writers Association in 1979. He was the editor-in-chief of World Literature of the Institute of Foreign Literature of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and a researcher at the Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Iowa. He is an expert in the field of Whitman research and was the editor-in-chief of Whitman Research. He has written Whitman Biography and Appreciation of Whitman's Famous Works, and has published representative translations such as Leaves of Grass, Heroic Elegy and Gone with the Wind.

He was born in a farmer and craftsman family in Long Island. He worked as a handyman, typesetter, teacher, newspaper editor and writer for local party newspapers. In his youth, he accepted democratic ideas and became a radical democrat. Later, he withdrew from political activities and devoted himself to writing. In 1855, he published the first edition of Leaves of Grass. His works show a strong personality and are full of unrestrained passion. The free verse style he pioneered greatly influenced the poetry creation of Guo Moruo, Wen Yiduo and others.
