The Odyssey is the only epic of homecoming in the epic series based on the legend of the Trojan War. After the resourceful Odysseus captured Troy with the wooden horse, he led his army across the sea to return home. He encountered various difficulties and obstacles on the way, and after ten years of wandering, all his companions died. Only he, with the help of the goddess Athena, persevered and returned to his hometown alone.
About the Author
Homer (about 9th century BC - 8th century BC) is an ancient Greek poet. It is said that the epics "Iliad" and "Odyssey" were written by him, collectively known as "Homer's Epics", which are the earliest literary works handed down from ancient Greece and have become an inexhaustible source of Western literature.
Wang Huansheng (1939-), born in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, studied ancient Greek and Roman language and literature at Moscow State University in the Soviet Union from 1960 to 1965. After returning to China, he joined the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences to conduct research on ancient Greek and Roman literature. His main works include History of Ancient Roman Literature and Outline of History of Ancient Roman Literary Criticism. His translations include Complete Works of Ancient Greek Drama (co-translated), Selected Greek and Roman Prose, Odyssey, On the Republic, On Law, and Elegies.
