About the Author · · · · · ·

Sogyal Rinpoche was born in Tibet and raised by Jamyang Khyentse Chokyi Lodro, one of the most revered spiritual teachers of the 20th century. From an early age, he developed a warm and intimate relationship with his teacher and was immersed in an atmosphere of wisdom, compassion and respect. This gave him a deep understanding of the essence of Buddhism, which, together with his traditional training as an incarnate lama, laid a solid foundation for his future role as a spiritual teacher.

After Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche passed away, Sogyal Rinpoche continued to practice with his two main teachers, Dudjom Rinpoche and Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, who inspired him to spread the Dharma in the West. In 1971, he went to Cambridge University in England to study comparative religion. In 1974, he began to spread the Dharma. Due to the enthusiastic demand from those who seek the Dharma, he continued to spread the Dharma in Europe, Eastern Europe, the United States, Australia and Asia.

Rinpoche made it his life’s work to spread the Dharma to the West, and so he wrote The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying to provide the basis for a practice that would allow people to understand the Dharma and apply it to their daily lives, thereby benefiting others and the world.

Few teachers have the gift of communication that Sogyal Rinpoche has, and his more than twenty years of living and teaching in the West have given him a deep understanding of the Western mind. He is known for his warmth, humor, and clarity of teaching; and for his ability to transcend religious, cultural, and psychological barriers to reveal the essence of the Dharma. He shares his personal experiences with amazing examples from everyday life, so he can directly relate to his students' experiences, thereby arousing a fresh feeling and flavor of the Dharma.

Sogyal Rinpoche comes from the great Dzogchen teachings, and he possesses the distinctive qualities of this lineage: great energy, a broad mind, and directness to people’s hearts.
