Having devoted himself to perfume creation for nearly 50 years, Jean-Claude Allena, Hermès’ exclusive perfumer, is not only a craftsman with an exquisite memory, but also an artist. Finding new faces from various scents allows him to indulge in the fun of experimentation and new discoveries.
Elena said: "I want to amaze people with ordinary smells." He put what he saw and thought in his daily life into words: strolling in gardens and markets, experimenting in the studio, enjoying jazz, Ukiyo-e, Chinese calligraphy and painting, waiting for blue irises to bloom, participating in perfume launches... He used a whole year's diary to record a journey of smell, revealing the code that only a perfumer can crack.
Elena's concise words record the inspirations and thoughts he gained in his daily life and travels, and also share his unique method of using symbols to evoke smells, using stories to lay out and extend perfumes, and creating different smell fantasies. This diary brings together the crystallization of his unique olfactory experience, while leading us into an imaginative universe of smells and giving us a glimpse into the creative mind of a master.
The book contains more than twenty summaries of natural scent recipes for readers to enjoy.
Imported Swedish light paper, spot color printing, sewn hardcover.
About the Author
【Author】Jean Claude Ellena
Born in Grasse, France, the city of perfumes, in 1947, his father, brother and daughter are all perfumers. At the age of 16, he worked the night shift as an apprentice in a local essential oil factory. At the age of 20, he joined the perfumer school run by Givaudan, the world's largest flavor and fragrance company, and became the first student. Although he only took nine months of classes, he eventually became a perfumer. Later, he worked for Haarmann & Reimer, the largest fragrance company in Germany at the time, which has now merged into Symrise, the world's fourth largest fragrance company.
In 1990, he co-founded the Osmothèque Perfume Museum in Versailles, which aims to record the history of perfume and preserve every finished perfume and perfume formula ever produced. It is the world's most complete and internationally recognized perfume database.
In 2004, he became the first "parfumeur exclusif" under Hermès, creating many highly-regarded perfumes. Since then, Hermès perfumes have been generous, natural, fresh and timeless. Elena's most famous perfume works include the "Garden" series and the salon perfume "Hermessence collection" series sold only in Hermès stores.
In 2000, he and his daughter founded their own salon fragrance brand, The Different Company.
In 2016, he retired from Hermès, and his last perfume works were Eau de Néroli Doré and Hermessence, Muguet Porcelain.
Elena now lives in Grasse and owns her own perfume laboratory in Cabris. She has published three books, "Perfume", "Perfumer's Diary" and "Green Perfume", but she never wears perfume.
