🎫Editor's Recommendation
◎The Rome in dreams, the Rome in movies, and the Rome in reality are intertwined - an alternative painting of Rome
Fellini is considered one of the most important contemporary film directors. He has a special affection for Rome and once said: "Rome is a mother, a perfect mother because she is indifferent. This mother has too many children, so she has no time for you, never asks you for anything, and doesn't expect anything. She accepts you when you come and lets you go when you leave, like Kafka's court."
This comic presents a charming Rome from Fellini's perspective - the people here are warm and friendly, with both elegance and laziness, and many great artists have stopped in this city. When he first met Rome, Fellini was still an unknown little painter who made a living by drawing funny portraits for others. Here he embarked on the road of film, made many friends, and harvested his own love.
The Rome in the book is both real and imaginary, and Fellini's memories, scenes from his dreams, and clips from his films are all linked together in a dreamlike way. It is both a comic biography of the film master Fellini and an alternative travelogue of Rome.
◎The dream of the dying connects the important moments of Fellini’s life
Fellini, who suffered from insomnia for a long time, was always in a state of half-sleep and half-wakefulness. This also shrouds this comic in a hazy poetic atmosphere. On his deathbed, Fellini dreamed of his life: his career as a director, his love, and every bit of his time in Rome...
Every time he walked through Rome, he recalled memories associated with this place. He told anecdotes about the Eternal City, about how he made a living at Termini train station, about how he started to be a street cartoonist in Veneto, about how he entered the magazine "Marco Aurelio", about the war...
His travels are accompanied by notes and dreams: Giulietta Masina, Aldo Fabrizzi, Rinaldo Glenn, Roberto Rossellini, Liliana Betti... as well as Dali, his idol Dick Tracy, the circus, the Cinematheque, his friendship with Battiers... In addition, he fantasizes about encountering the ghosts of Anita Ekberg, Marcello Mastroianni, Pier Paolo Pasolini, and finally, in the hospital, he meets Mastone, the mysterious character from the film he never shot.
◎Elegant watercolors smudge Rome in the mist, rediscovering the vague memories
Tito Alva is good at telling the story of artists through comics. In this book "Fellini in Rome", unlike the heavily made-up Rome in Fellini's films, Alva depicts another side of the city with simple colors and smart lines. The comic captures the silence after the hustle and bustle in Fellini's films. The work connects Fellini's memories with dreams, and he has a relationship with the city that seems like a mother and son and a lover.
The paper of this book is 118g white cloud glue and the paperback is medium size, which has a good flipping feel and provides readers with a light reading experience.
🎫Media Recommendation
Tito Alva's genius writing serves this story, which is half a dream and half a mysterious Rome like Giorgio de Chirico's "The Forum". ——Goodreads reader
Tito Alva's watercolors transport us to this magical city, and we follow the director as he walks through the streets, excited by the memories of the moments that shaped Fellini's life and work. - Zone Negative, a comics website
