What can we do in the face of the "black hole" of history? Is it possible to get out of the darkness? This is the question that the famous French art historian Georges Didi-Hubermann tried to explore in a long letter to Laszlo Nemes, the director of Son of Saul. This is also the main part of the book.
Four photos that survived from the Auschwitz concentration camp constitute the main historical evidence for the core plot of Son of Saul. These photos bring back the issue of the Holocaust's unrepeatability and unimaginability. In the appendix of this book, "Four Negatives Pulled from Hell", George Didi-Huberman combined the memories of Auschwitz survivors to sort out the background and origins of these four important historical photos.
The postscript written by film theorist Li Yang (Daqihupi) discusses the ethical dilemmas faced by Western Holocaust films based on a comprehensive review of the history of the films.

-About the Author-
Georges Didi-Huberman (1953- ) is a famous French philosopher and art historian who teaches at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. To date, Didi-Huberman has published more than 50 books on the theory and history of images, with research areas covering Italian Renaissance painting, contemporary political images, and the inheritance and extension of the theoretical legacy of Aby Warburg and Walter Benjamin. He has lectured at many universities and academic institutions, and has curated many large-scale academic exhibitions around the world.

Li Yang, nicknamed "Daqihupi", is the vice dean of the School of Arts at Peking University, a professor, doctoral supervisor, and independent producer. He mainly studies film theory and Western contemporary art theory. He holds a doctorate in film studies from Charles de Gaulle University in France and is a senior visiting scholar of the Erasmus program of the European University Committee. He has written "Gestures in Leone's Westerns: An Introduction to the Analysis of Film Motion Language", "The Ethics of Gaze", "History of Cinema Culture", etc. He is the editor-in-chief of the "New Cinema Series", and has translated "Leone's Past" and "Close-up: Abbas and His Films".
