Shen Congwen 1902-1988
Born in Fenghuang County, Hunan Province, he is one of the most outstanding Chinese writers in the 20th century. He joined the army in his early years and began literary creation in 1924. He is an important practitioner and representative writer of the vernacular revolution. His works are collected into more than 80 volumes, including novels such as Border Town, Longhe, Longzhu, Tiger Cub, Moonlight Scene, prose such as Congwen Autobiography, Xiangxing Miscellaneous Notes, Xiangxi, and literary theory such as Waste Postage and its sequel, Zhuxu, and Yunnan Cloud Collection. After the 1950s, he mainly engaged in the research of ancient Chinese costumes. The Research on Ancient Chinese Costumes compiled in his later years filled a gap in the history of Chinese cultural relics research.
Shen Congwen created the pure and beautiful world of Xiangxi with a sincere heart and a pen, using the cleanest words. His works are full of the beauty of nature and the purity of human nature.
