"How sad! I will grow old, but this painting will remain forever young...
If only it could be the other way around! If I were the one who was forever young and the painting was the one who got old, how wonderful it would be!
For this, I would give everything I have in this world!
I'd trade my soul for it!"
Dorian Gray, a beautiful boy born with natural beauty, discovered his amazing beauty after seeing the portrait painted by the painter Howard. He also believed Sir Henry's boasting and began to feel pain for his fleeting youth and beauty. He expressed the hope that the portrait could take the burden of time and soul on his behalf and keep him young and beautiful forever. His unrealistic wish was inexplicably realized later. He began to squander his sins, and finally the portrait became the evidence of his evil deeds. He lived and died because of the portrait. As described at the end of the book, "They entered the house and found a dazzling portrait of the owner hanging on the wall. It was the same as the last time they saw him. It was a miracle that he magically maintained the ultimate youth and beauty. There was a corpse lying on the floor, wearing an evening gown, with a knife stuck in his heart. He was haggard, wrinkled, and ugly. It was not until they saw the ring on the dead man's hand that they recognized who it was."
The publication of The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1891 caused a great stir and was attacked fiercely by the media. Wilde also met Sir Alfred Douglas that year, and his tragic fate began.
Due to the influence of Oscar Wilde's works in China, architect Wang Dahong translated "The Picture of Dorian Gray" into "Du Liankui", and the scene was also changed to Taipei at that time.
The Picture of Dorian Gray is a representative work of aestheticism in the late 19th century, and can be regarded as the three masterpieces of the "art for art's sake" trend in drama, novels and paintings. The beautiful words and gorgeous images in this work are attached to abnormal characters and absurd plots, so it has been misunderstood for a long time. In fact, there is another true meaning in the book.

Oscar Wilde
Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
British writer, playwright, poet
Oscar Wilde created many works throughout his life, and his fairy tales, plays and novels are now literary classics.
In the Victorian era when he lived, people compared his fairy tales with those of Andersen and admired his plays to the utmost, but his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray was controversial because of its unacceptable artistic views. When a homosexual love affair got Wilde into a lawsuit, this novel became one of the evidences, and he was eventually sentenced to two years in prison for "gross indecency". Three years after being released from prison, Wilde died in a small hotel in Paris at the age of 46.
