Jun'ichi Watanabe (1933-2014)
A famous Japanese literary master and national writer. Born in Hokkaido in 1933. Graduated from Sapporo Medical University, worked as an orthopedic surgeon for a time, but later gave up medicine to pursue professional literary creation. Won the Naoki Prize for Literature with his novel "Light and Shadow" and the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for Literature with "Distant Sunset". Won the "Purple Ribbon Medal" from the Japanese government in 2003. On April 30, 2014, Jun'ichi Watanabe died of cancer at the age of 80.
He published more than 130 works in his lifetime, with his most representative work being Paradise Lost. The illicit sex described in it caused a huge response and was made into a TV series and a movie, which set off a "Paradise Lost" craze in Japan. Other representative works include Makeup, which incorporates modern love into Japanese classical beauty, Red Castle with the theme of "love and sex", and his last autobiographical novel, My Eternal Home, which was his last work before his death.
