Graduated from the School of Medicine at Hokkaido University in 1979. While training at the Department of Medical Biochemistry at Rockefeller University in New York, he conducted research on AGE, which has attracted much attention as a cause of diabetic complications, for about 5 years. During this period, he successfully developed a method for measuring AGE in blood, which was the first in the world. He has published academic papers on AGE as the first author in world-class journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and THE LANCET. In 1996, he became a lecturer at the School of Medicine at Hokkaido University. In 2000, he became a professor at the Kurume University School of Medicine. Since 2003, he has opened the "AGE Makita Specialty Hospital" in Ginza, Tokyo, specializing in the treatment of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and obesity, and has treated more than 200,000 patients.
