Introduction · · · · · ·
Dark Thomas is Blanchot's first "fictional work". The English and German translators of this book have not concealed the difficulty of translating and even reading it. Foucault once pointed out that one of the characteristics of Blanchot's works is "a dynasty that is detached from representations", which is consistent with the reading experience of Dark Thomas: a love without past, future, motivation, or reason is so shallow that it is difficult for people to have a clear image, but these imageless images are like nightmares that are hard to give up.
An unstable work. Harold Bloom put this book on the list of recommended books for the troubled times in the appendix of The Western Canon, which is unexpectedly appropriate. In his famous lecture, the master of psychoanalysis Lacan praised Dark Thomas as a "realization of fantasy". For Chinese readers, the publication of the Chinese version of Dark Thomas will undoubtedly fill in the missing link in French thought.
