Description
Introduction · · · · · ·
When it comes to contemporary art, a hundred people will have a hundred different interpretations.
Since the 1980s, curator Obrist has consciously interviewed and recorded the artists he met, and has accumulated nearly 2,000 hours of recording materials. In the midst of chatting and laughing, his book includes his dialogues with 19 (groups of) important contemporary artists and architects, including David Hockney, Gilbert and George Duo, Gerhard Richter, Louise Bourgeois, Rem Koolhaas, Oscar Niemeyer, Zaha Hadid, etc. They are all (or were) important figures in the contemporary art world, such as David Hockney, known as the "Godfather of British Art", Louise Bourgeois, an important contemporary feminist artist, Marina Abramović, the "Mother of Performance Art", Rem Koolhaas and Zaha Hadid, architects with unique and controversial architectural styles, and Oscar Niemeyer, who participated in the construction of the new capital of Brazil, Brasilia, and so on.
In the relaxed conversation, the artists and architects explained the personal and social issues they faced in their creations, the creative ideas of specific works, future creative plans, and even suggestions for young artists, etc. Through this book, we can see the source of their inspiration and understand the creative stories behind them.
The writing style of this book is inspired by the Renaissance art historian Giorgio Vasari's "Lives of the Great Men". It does not distinguish between artists and architects, but records these contemporaries as historical figures. In fact, contemporary artists and architects have long broken through the barriers of disciplines and are conducting cross-border practices in multiple fields. Whether in terms of writing style or content, this book is "very contemporary"!
19 dialogues, 19 artists (groups), condensed 19 aspects of contemporary art, reflecting the rich forms of contemporary art. We can also examine the era we live in through the eyes of artists.
