As a Nobel Prize winner in Literature and a Goethe Prize winner, Hesse's admiration spreads across the globe, and his works have been translated into more than 40 languages, with a total print run of more than 140 million copies.
Demian is one of Hesse's masterpieces. It describes the young Sinclair's mental journey of pursuing himself, firmly becoming himself, and exploring his own destiny with lyrical style and delicate words. This psychological novel can be said to be Hesse's iconic and monumental masterpiece.
Born and raised in the "bright world", Sinclair accidentally discovered a completely different "other world". The chaos and darkness there made him anxious and confused, and he fell into the disaster brought by lies. At this time, a boy named Demian appeared and took him out of the swamp. From then on, he began his journey of lonely self-discovery. In the following years, "Demian" appeared in different identities and became his guide every time he was lonely searching and making difficult choices.
Thomas Mann, a great German writer, commented: "This is a work that hits the nerve of the times with its extremely precise description. A whole generation of young people is convinced that a spokesperson comes from the depths of their lives, and they are grateful and infatuated by him. Everyone's life is a journey to the self, an attempt at a path, and a quiet call of a path."
