Shi Tiesheng was born in Beijing in 1951. He graduated from junior high school in 1967. In 1969, he went to work in the countryside in northern Shaanxi. Three years later, his legs were paralyzed and he returned to Beijing. After returning to Beijing, he worked as a temporary worker in a street factory. Seven years later, he returned home for recuperation due to worsening illness. In 1979, he began to publish novels, essays, plays and other works. His main works include: short stories "My Distant Qingping Bay", "Life is Like a String", "Notes on the Old House"; essays "I and the Altar of Earth", "Good Luck Design", "Fragments of Sickness"; novellas "Reportage on Pastor Zhan", "Novel 1 or Short Story 4"; novels "Notes on Retreat" and "My Journey to Ding Yi".
